FARGO, ND (Valley News Live) - Conditions on the interstates in the F-M Metro are ever-changing as the wind blows fresh snow onto the roadways.
"As we go out and treat these areas, the snow will blow across the road, refreeze, and then with the snow blowing across it as it refreezes,” said Kent Leysring with the North Dakota Department of Transportation. “It, in a sense, polishes it so it makes it even slippery yet."
Leysring says they have had their full crew out all day long and will be out all night, adding that they just can’t get to it fast enough.
"We have been salt/sanding plus plowing,” Leysring said.
The highway patrol and the DOT have been working together. Leysring says these scattered conditions are often the most dangerous.
"People will think the roads are good and then, all of the sudden, where it's blowing and slicking, it ice clear again," Leysring said.
Troopers had already responded to 20 calls for vehicles that slid off the roadway in the metro by 3 p.m. Tuesday. They warn black ice could be a problem until Wednesday morning as everyone is making their commutes.
The top areas to watch out for are on-ramps and exit ramps where people are merging.
Captain Bryan Niewind said the most dangerous areas for I-94 are between Veterans Blvd and I-29.
For I-29, it’s between 19th Avenue and I-94.
Specifically, Niewind listed 13th Avenue and Main Avenue as areas of concern.
"Slow down, and make sure you have your headlights on and you're wearing your seatbelt," Leysring said.
