Portland will see a slight break in the steady rain Thursday morning, with fog, low clouds and some possible sprinkles.
Fog was seen on traffic cameras along Interstates 5 and 205 near Tualatin before 5 a.m. Low clouds and fog could linger through most of the morning commute. Forecasters with the National Weather Service expect showers beginning by the afternoon. The high will be 53 degrees.
The low Thursday night will also be 53 degrees. Moderate temperatures have been a feature of the systems moving into the Pacific Northwest this week.
A strong wet front moving into western Washington looks to stay north of the metro area Friday. Portland will start out rainy then taper to scattered showers by the afternoon. The high temp will be 60. Some areas south of Salem could see even warmer high temps and more clearing.
The jet stream sags back into northwest Oregon bringing a cold front early Saturday. The heaviest rain will start in the morning on the coast and move inland by the afternoon. Rain is expected throughout the day. The high will be 54. Under strong showers, some low-lying areas and small streams could see localized flooding.
Sunday’s temperatures dive more than 15 degrees down from Friday’s high of 60 to only 44. Rain and snow showers are likely early, then will become all rain after about 10 a.m. The snow level will start at 600 feet then rise to 1,300 feet in the afternoon. No accumulation is expected on the valley floor.
At this point, forecasters are looking at Monday as Portland’s next fully dry day. January offered up only one dry day. There were two days with traces of rain at the airport, according to the weather service. Rainfall at the Portland Airport for winter, so far, is nearly normal with 28.31 inches recorded between Nov. 1, 2019 - Jan. 27, 2020. Average rainfall for that time period is 30 inches.
