How the weather has been impacting metro roads - Valley News Live

FARGO/MOORHEAD - (Valley News Live) Temperatures could climb to 40 degrees this weekend, which would top our recent warmer winter weather.

While this may be nice, it's impacting the roads.

Soon it will drop again. These changes in temperature are one of the reasons why potholes appear.

"It's been relatively warm here so we're going to see a little more of that," said Steve Moore of Moorhead Public Works. "As the snow melts off the roads, you're gonna be able to see them too."

For street crews, their concern is elsewhere.

"We're still in the process of moving snow," said Lee Andreson of Fargo Public Works. "We're still hauling 6-7 hundred truck-fulls of snow a day."

The potholes, as pesky as they may be, aren't a priority right now. However, officials say they are not ignoring the issue and have a plan in place.

"As soon as the thaw starts and we start seeing temperatures above freezing then we'll start looking at them," said Moore.

The potholes that are annoying but not a danger to your car, expect to see them a little longer.

Other potholes are being dealt with now.

"The ones that develop that could potentially damage cars we have to do something with and we will," explained Anderson.

One of the areas that crews will be working on is 25th Street and 32nd Avenue South, near Sanford.

"We have to do something to some of these," said Anderson. "The problem is it cools off. The next time it warms up, those same potholes will probably come back."

As for the others, the crews not only ask for your patience but your help in locating the trouble spots that need to be addressed sooner, rather than later.

"Usually in March and April," said Anderson. "That's usually the time frame when we start addressing them on a daily basis."

If you know of a nasty pothole in Fargo, you can go on the city's website to let them know.

In Moorhead, they suggest giving them a call, and it would also help to send them a picture.
