D.C. metro area braces for potential coronavirus cases - The Hill

After three potential coronavirus cases reported in Maryland and Virginia on Jan. 27, health facilities in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia region are standing by in the event more testing is needed.

The Virginia Department of Health confirmed that two Patients Under Investigation (PUIs) for the coronavirus tested negative and are awaiting the results of a third potential patient. The Maryland Department of Health confirmed they are awaiting on a single PUI’s test results.

Officials at the D.C. Department of Health also confirmed that there are two pending coronavirus tests waiting for lab results. One other PUI result has come back negative.

WTOP reports that the remaining Virginia PUI is a George Mason University student who is “self-isolating” until their test results arrive. The report states that the student lives off-campus.

“At this time, the current risk to the public and the Mason community remains low, and the university has been advised that additional precautions are not necessary,” officials at George Mason told The Washington Post. “The local health department is conducting an investigation and will contact anyone whom they suspect to be at risk of exposure and illness.”

The virus originated in Wuhan, China, and has since spread to 16 countries globally and four states in the U.S., with five confirmed cases and 73 pending cases. 32 test results have come back negative.

The Washington Post reports that students are returning back to the Washington D.C. region from China as State Department travel warnings escalate and infections skyrocket.

George Washington University, the University of Virginia, American University and Georgetown University all have students in abroad programs in China, and have both assisted students in coming home and discouraged upcoming travel. No potential cases are associated with any of the schools.

The Wuhan virus is confirmed to be transmitted between humans, and has symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is showing an incubation period between two and 14 days.
