Metro director of health Michael Caldwell has ordered all restaurants to suspend their dine-in services and all gyms and workout centers to close in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Friday's decision expands Caldwell’s original order to close all area bars and limit restaurant capacity to 50 percent, which he ordered Sunday after the Metro board of health declared a public health emergency.
On Wednesday, Mayor John Cooper declared a civil state of emergency, redirecting all Metro agencies, departments and committees to help the department of health in their COVID-19 initiatives.
Cooper and his team will also meet with faith organizations later today to urge them to abide by CDC guidelines and switch to digital solutions to maintain proper social distancing.
The news comes as Davidson County surpasses 100 confirmed cases in the area. At Friday's press briefing, Coronavirus Task Force leader Alex Jahangir said there were 110 confirmed cases so far, up 50 cases from yesterday, and that we'll continue to see increases as testing becomes more widely available. Metro is still having to abide by CDC guidelines for testing, which includes exhibiting symptoms but testing negative for influenza.
The move will hurt the already-struggling local hospitality industry, which according to Butch Spyridon of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp will see the most economic damages through the pandemic.
The restaurant scene is already seeing layoffs, with some spots adapting to take-out and curbside offerings, as it seeks creative ways to maintain some revenue as the public attempts to keep the COVID-19 infection rate at a manageable level for local medical centers.
