Changes to Santa Cruz Metro’s service start Monday - Santa Cruz Sentinel

SANTA CRUZ — Metro is making changes to service effective Monday to protect its employees and customers while still providing an essential service to the community.

After Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statewide shelter in place order, Santa Cruz Metro is enacting changes that will affect daily operations and ridership.

Metro will continue to provide fixed-route and paratransit service for as long as possible during the pandemic and will continue to receive customer calls at 831-425-8600. Metro will enforce the following changes:

• All daily service provided by Metro will run on the Saturday-Sunday schedule until further notice. This will result in fewer buses running, less frequency of service and later start times and earlier end times. For schedule/timetable information, consult the Metro Headways Bus Riders Guide or visit scmtd.com.

• All School Term Service is suspended until further notice.

• Metro will suspend the collection of fares on buses and ParaCruz paratransit services until further notice.

• Customers will enter and exit through the rear door of a bus until further notice. This applies to buses with two or more doors and is limited to buses in which the bus operator can actuate the rear door. On all other buses, customers will continue to board at the front door and will not pay a fare. Buses that allow customers to enter at the rear door will have a sign on the front door directing them. Any customer who wants to board and exit through the front door for ADA purposes can continue doing so.

• Flip seats at the front of the bus in the mobility securement area will be restricted to ADA customers using mobility devices. There will be no ambulatory or general seating. This applies to all fixed-route buses, including Highway 17 commuter buses.

• Customers cannot stand in the restricted securement area and will be required to sit in available seating toward the middle or rear of the bus, keeping at least 6 feet from other customers.

• ParaCruz paratransit services is prioritizing customers requiring service to/from essential services, such as doctor’s appointments and dialysis. All other trips will continue to be served, but not necessarily on the schedule requested by the customer.

• All Metro Customer Service and private vendor services, including restroom facilities, at both the Pacific Station and the Watsonville Transit Center will be suspended until further notice and the lobbies at those locations are closed. Bus operations will continue at these facilities.

• Metro Administration is closed to the public until further notice.

Customers can help Metro continue to provide its services safely by:

• Avoiding riding the bus when sick.

• Reduce their use of Metro to essential trips only, such as doctor’s appointments and work.

• While onboard a bus, observe social distancing to the greatest extent possible. If there are too many people on the bus, consider taking the next one.

• Do not stand near the bus operator or in the restricted securement area.

• Consider adjusting trips to off-peak or non-commute periods.

• Limit carry-on items and keep aisles clear. No items will be allowed to be placed in restricted areas.

• Be courteous to other riders and the bus operator by following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 Prevention tips posted on the buses and on the CDC website.

• Continue to observe the California Department of Public Health’s March 10 recommendation for high-risk individuals to avoid crowds, mass gatherings, large events and public transit, and to stay home as much as possible.
