To combat spread of the coronavirus, the MTA is going “above and beyond” cleaning and disinfecting its stations and trains, according to Patrick Foye.
“Train cars and buses will be cleaned daily with the MTA’s full fleet being cleaned every 72 hours,” said Foye, who is chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
There are two confirmed cases in New York, one of them a man from Westchester County. Though he has been identified as a commuter, Foye said it is not known if the patient commuted on Metro-North.
There has been no confirmed case of coronavirus in Connecticut.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Metro-North has disinfected 60 percent of its rolling stock, 63 of its stations, Foye said, calling it a “Substantial increase in the frequency and intensity in disinfecting.”
Foye said ridership has not changed since late December when the coronavirus — abbreviated as COVID-19 — was first identified in Wuhan, China.
Though he said he has no hard ridership numbers yet, “right now we believe it’s unchanged.”
“There does not appear to be any increase in bridge and tunnel crossings,” Foye said.
Metro-North operates New Haven Line service for New York and Connecticut. The New Haven Line was used by 40.4 million people in 2016, according to the MTA.
