Snow blankets the metro on Saturday - KSHB

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Metro residents woke up to find icy streets and falling snow Saturday morning.

Late evening rain coated the city's streets with a thin layer of ice that crews were left to treat in the morning.

By mid-afternoon, snow had blanketed the metro, causing more traffic problems for drivers.

Several metro school districts and churches canceled weekend activities because of the storm.

Independence reported that two of their trucks slid off the roads early in the morning while out laying down treatment.

City traffic maps showed deteriorated driving conditions on all major roadways as the storm system moved through.

41 Action News staff members encountered several minor crashes and cars off the road on their morning commutes.

Kansas City, Missouri, police said there were many minor crashes overnight, but no one was seriously injured. Other area departments reported the same thing.

Overland Park police asked that drivers walk-in non-injury crash reports at a later date, since officers were busy attending to injury accidents. They suggest exchanging names, addresses, phone numbers, license numbers and insurance information then filing the report at the Sanders Justice Center or Scafe Building at a later date.

As snow continued to fall into the afternoon hours, traffic incidents increased across the metro - especially in the Northland. Still, no serious injuries had been reported as of 1:30 p.m.

Many flights out of the Kansas City International Airport were canceled Saturday morning. Only a few arriving flights were canceled, so Texans fans should be able to make their way to Kansas City for the Chiefs playoff game Sunday.

Delays continued into the afternoon and evening for both arriving and departing flights.

RideKC said that several of their buses were experiencing delays Saturday throughout the day.

The Streetcar was also experiencing delays in the morning, as ice covered the overhead lines. A supplemental bus was added to the route to help riders get around.

During the morning hours, a few thousand Evergy customers were without power. No other metro electricity providers reported any outages. Evergy's outings were mostly taken care of by the afternoon hours.
