Letter | Assembly bills would significantly hurt Metro - Santa Cruz Sentinel

Sometimes good ideas have bad consequences. That’s the situation with three Assembly Bills AB 1350 (Chu-D), AB 2012 (Nazarian-D), and AB 2176 (Holden-D). These bills would require Metro transit systems in California to provide free transit for people 18 years old and younger; people aged 65 and older; and for UC, CSU and California Community Colleges students.

Sounds good but it would create a deficit for our local Metro in excess of $6 million, a big chunk from a $52 million budget, resulting in service cuts and layoffs. Seniors and youth already receive discounts, as do visually impaired individuals. A much better idea would be for the Legislature to create a new incentive program with new funding. Contact the authors or Assemblymen Jose Medina (D), chair of the Committee on Higher Education and urge them to withdraw or revise these bills.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at www.santacruzsentinel.com/submit-letters.
