COVID prompts Metro to run more buses to spread out riders - Houston Chronicle

Metro is giving some bus riders more space, as a buffer to concerns over the new coronavirus, officials said.

“During morning and evening rush hours, more buses will now be put in service on heavily-traveled local routes in order to lessen crowding,” transit agency officials said in a news release.

The aim is to reduce seating on buses by about 50 percent, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said. As buses reach half-capacity, operators will advise riders to take the next bus. Metro’s 40-foot buses that operate most routes have 41 seats, while its park and ride buses have 55 seats.

The agency said the decision “may result in delays on certain routes and riders should plan accordingly.”

Ridership across the system is down because of people staying home from work and spring break for Houston Independent School District. Despite the drop, and the fears of people gathering in groups, officials have not signaled closing transit is imminent or likely. Many area residents require buses and trains to access jobs where their presence is required.

As virus fears have grown, Metro said it has stepped up cleaning of buses, trains and stops, along with encouraging good personal hygiene via posters and announcements at transit centers.
