HOUSTON – One person was injured by shattered glass Monday after bullets hit a METRO bus and a bus stop in north Houston.

The shooting was reported about 6:20 a.m. near the corner of Veterans Memorial Drive and West Gulf Bank Road.

Police said someone opened fire on a man near that intersection as he was walking to meet an Uber driver.

At least three bullets aimed at the man struck a nearby Metro bus, shattering glass and injuring a rider. The injured rider suffered minor cuts around his head.

“I felt something dripping," the rider said. “I was bleeding (from a) little flesh wound on the top of my head, and then I looked around and found a bullet. (I was) very scary. Just thank God that I am alive and thank god for METROs double pane glass. It’s a lifesaver for real.”

Authorities believe the shooter is the ex-boyfriend to the man’s girlfriend. The mother of the targeted man was visibly shaken as she watched detectives speak with her son. However, she was thankful her son wasn’t injured.

“It’s scary because we thought something had happened where he had been shot,” said Rosie Mendoza.

Video of the scene showed at least two bullet holes in bus No. 5402, which appears to run as the No. 212 bus on the Seton Lake/Downtown route. Another bullet hole was seen in the glass of the bus stop shelter.

Investigators are still working to learn more details surrounding the shooting but made it clear the man was the target, not the bus.
