Metro police strategize to combat auto burglary and theft - NewsChannel5.com

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Metro Police say vehicle burglaries and thefts continue to be a big problem in Nashville.

Officers know during the winter this type of crime picks up because people are warming up their car. However, some people just aren't listening to their warnings.

According to police reports this month, South precinct had 59 thefts of vehicles and 3 handguns stolen from those vehicles.

Police say the thefts aren't fixed to any particular location, but are spread throughout the area. The Hermitage area had 56 vehicle thefts. In North Nashville, about 30 vehicles were taken, and those were also spread out across the area.

Leaders of Metro Police say it's difficult when officers make an arrest, the suspect goes to court and gets out with a low punishment. Frequently, they go back out and commit the same crimes over again. Each precinct is allowed to enact different strategies to cut down on crimes in their neighborhoods.

The East Precinct commander advises everyone to always advertise if you have cameras, dogs, neighborhood watch or access to Homeowners Association to cut down burglaries and thefts.
